Designing a Cohesive Visual Identity for a National Arts Institution

INSAS (Institut national supérieur des arts du spectacle et des techniques de diffusion) is a nationally recognised theatre and film school in Brussels. In 2012, I was brought on to redesign the institution’s visual identity and lead its digital communication transformation — from branding and web design to internal tools and staff training.

Brand Refresh & Design System

I redrew the institution’s logo, refining its curves and selecting typography that honoured the school’s creative philosophy while giving it a contemporary edge. The iconic “hand” mark (a symbol of the school’s commitment to nurturing individual artistic identities) was preserved and elevated. I then developed a colour-coded system assigning each academic section its own colour, ensuring instant visual differentiation across all materials: shared documents, signage, brochures and digital platforms. This design system remained in use for over a decade.

Web Design & Digital Communication

I redesigned and modernised the institution’s website with a focus on clarity, accessibility and responsive design. The structure prioritised accurate information and intuitive navigation, making it easy for prospective students, staff and external visitors to find what they needed. I established editorial guidelines and trained the team to manage and update content independently using WordPress, ensuring the solution was sustainable and scalable without external support.

Templates, Asset Management & Training

To support the transition to digital workflows, I configured the Google Apps suite (email, groups, shared drives) and built an intranet portal to centralise internal communication. I created and printed a practical guidebook for staff, a horizontally formatted manual with step-by-step instructions covering WordPress publishing, image handling, Google Drive sharing, Vimeo uploads and social media basics. Each double-page spread addressed one specific task, designed for maximum clarity and immediate usability. This hands-on approach to training ensured that even non-technical colleagues could participate confidently in the institution’s digital communication.

Templates, Asset Management & Training

Over the years, I produced a wide range of branded materials (brochures, posters, DVD compilations and promotional assets) all aligned with the visual identity I had established. The graphic system I created provided a consistent, recognisable foundation that supported the school’s communication for over ten years.
